Unicef ​​warned that 2 out of 3 girls and boys in Argentina are poor or deprived of basic rights

Two out of three girls and boys in Argentina (66%) are poor by income or are deprived of basic rightsAs the access to education, housing, and safe water or habitat conditionsaccording to a report presented today by Unicef ​​​​and made based on official data from the Permanent Household Survey (EPH) of INDEC.

“The magnitude and persistence of poverty generates the urgent need to protect items supposedly intended for children and adolescents“said Luisa Brumana, representative of Unicef ​​Argentina, during the presentation made at the organization’s offices in the Retiro neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

According to the report, they are approximately 8.8 million girls and boys who experience deprivation monetary or some of the fundamental rights considered in the EPH.

Overheated prices: according to INDEC, inflation in January was 6%

besides, 3.7 million face both types of deprivation simultaneously: that is, 3 out of 10 girls and boys live in homes with insufficient income and, at the same time, have at least one basic right violated.

“This situation, which reflects the hard core of poverty, has been going on for more than six years“, is noted in the study called “Monetary poverty and non-monetary deprivation in girls, boys and adolescents in Argentina”.

The inflation of January does not give respite

One of the indicators that most reflects the economic difficulties of the country is also the Consumer Price Index, which in January marked 6%, cutting a bearish streak in the last months of the year. December 2022 had marked a 5.1% increase.

With respect to the same month of 2022 the increase was 98.8%, according to the report released by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).
