The fishing season, that is, the firmest period In quantity, variety and quality of pieces, it begins the first days of October with whiting, catfish, elephant fish, stick fish, pomfret, dogfish, silverside and sole.
In mid-November, always depending on the water temperature, the “main dishes”: the white croaker and the sharks.
In December, the dogfish disappear and the fishing is even, adding the large croakers from the Culebra channel until mid-March. From this date they dwindling croakers and sharks, leaving the rest of the species until after Easter.
In this context, we note that you can also opt for an output, exclusively for scuttling silverside with paternoster fleet mode, with very good catches that presents an average between 250 and 500 grams.
To be successful in San Blas we must respect the tidal schedule (high and low), for which we manage with the tables made for this purpose, which are given away in some shops. We have four daily tides, one every six hours.
We must always attend to the chosen place two to three hours before the stop of the tide, this is both on the coast and on board.
Boarding the Culebra
The first to the famous Culebra channel, which is characterized for being a fishing vessel that always yields very well, with good quantities and important shipments, it began between October and November extending until the first days of December. This is where the dogfish enters (fishing with mandatory return), accompanied by a variety of whiting as protagonists, acardumadas in the middle of the water or bottom, depending on the time of the tide. We recommend using a fioco to attract the attention of whiting hunters.
From December to April, with the increase in temperature and the best weather conditions, fishing for large white croakers is the main attraction and, without a doubt, the ideal point to obtain them is the Culebra. To access the interesting areas you have to sail for more than an hour, which is why it is essential to have good boats.
the tide is important
The varied within the bay this year is very rich in species and quantity. As soon as we anchor, we seek to find large croakers embodying a piece of prawn well tied on the hook below. We use lines with two hooks with sliding lead and in the upper one we place pieces of anchovy to bait and tempt the whiting.
If the idea is only to fish white croakers it is best to use a single hook that works well with slip lead anchoring.
Very good catches were achieved especially when the current it was stronger, that’s why we have to take advantage of when the water “walks”. Without a doubt, it is the best moment of pique. It was there that the bigheads (very large blonde croakers) arched the reeds with sizes that ranged between three and six kilos.
The hour of the hunters
At one point we observed the reduction of the pike, immediately our captain hid from us that it could be due to the presence of bacota shark, which motivated the assembly of heavy equipment made up of 50-pound rods and 4/0 and 6/0 reels. The rig consisted of one meter of steel cable with a single hook (it can be 10/0 to 12/0). The chosen meat: a piece of mullet.
We let drift several lines at different distances to avoid tangling. The wait was not long. The first buzzer marked a tremendous bite which demanded the maximum resistance of the fisherman, after 30 minutes of fighting to hoist a shark weighing almost 50 kilos on board, which after releasing it from the hook was returned to the sea (it should be noted that fishing is, mandatorily, with return).
In total we had three catches of bacota that left the fishermen more than satisfied, due to the great combativeness of the species. Thus we concluded this exciting fishing to continue with the varied one.
The festival was complete, with a large harvest of the most coveted. This season San Blas surprises with the large number of captures that were achieved during the days.
