To be considered middle class, a family of four needed an income of at least $251,423.20 during January 2023.
To complete a Total Basic Basket and not be considered poor, the same family group must have a minimum income of $201,138.56, according to what was reported by the General Directorate of Statistics and Censuses of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
Compared to December, the indices increasing 6.9% in line with Ia measurement carried out by the Buenos Aires organization that recently calculated inflation at 7.3% for the same period.

Meanwhile, the indigence line based on the Basic Food Basket stood at $89,837 and the poverty line based on the Total Basic Basket in the order of $163,339.
Being that a typical family comprises an economically active man and woman, it follows that, with two minimum wages, in CABA it no longer reaches the poverty line. As of January, the minimum vital and mobile wage is $67,743, with which, with the sum of the two minimum wages, there are still 20% below the poverty lineframed in the situation of “Non-indigent poverty”.
Another relevant data is that in January both baskets passed 100% year-on-year increase. While, for the poverty line, the increase in the interannual basket is in the order of 104.2%$163,339 vs $79,988 (January 22), for the indigence line, the increase in the basic food basket was 110.16%, $89,837 vs. $42,747 (January 22). Both, above the increase in the general interannual level calculated by the same Statistical Office, which was 99.4%.
The aforementioned report also establishes the updated criteria used by the district to delimit socioeconomic levels based on income level. The classification for the month of January for a typical family of two 35-year-old adults and two school-age children indicates an interannual increase of 102.35%.
For these values, it must be taken into account that the type family that defines the report owns the property in which you live, with which the rental needs are covered.

Income Levels and Class
- In a situation of indigence: Households whose total monthly income is not enough to cover the Basic Food Basket (CBA – Indigence Line). During January, those who received income less than $89,836.89 belonged to this interval.
- In a situation of non-indigent poverty: Households whose total monthly income is not enough to cover the Total Basic Basket (CBT – Poverty Line) but allows at least to acquire the CBA. In this situation are those who receive income between $89,836.89 and $163,339.10.
- not vulnerable poor: Households whose total monthly income is at least the CBT and does not reach the Total Basket (TC) of the Consumption Basket System. The range of families with income between $163,339.10 and $201,138.56.
- fragile middle sector: Households whose total monthly income is at least the TC and does not reach 1.25 times the TC of the Consumption Basket System. Income between $201,138.56 and $251,423.20.
- Middle sector “middle class”: Households whose total monthly income is at least 1.25 times the TC and does not reach 4 times the TC of the Consumption Basket System. Receiving income ranging from $251,423.20 to $804,554.27.
- affluent sector: Households whose monthly income is 4 times or more the TC of the Consumption Basket System. From $804,554.27 onwards.
