Due to an “error” by a Buenos Aires government contractor, homes were destroyed in Barrio 31

Thirty families from the Padre Múgica neighborhood (Barrio 31) “they were left on the street” due to an error in the demolition of a slab on the site, which affected another part of the construction and ended up destroying several houses. The event occurred last Wednesday and, although some were referred to hotels or inns of the Buenos Aires Government, the residents demand from the Buenos Aires authorities “a definitive solution” to the housing problem they suffer.

The demolition carried out on Wednesday could have been a major tragedy. The event occurred around 2:00 p.m. when a contractor company for the Buenos Aires government in the demolition work on behalf of the UPE (Special Projects Unit), which depends on the Ministry of Development and Habitat of the City, proceeded to pull down a slab, within the planned plan. However, this movement had serious collateral damage, because it ended up causing the collapse of another adjoining slab, which destroyed a building inhabited by 30 families.

The “mistake” cost those who were living in the adjacent house to leave “with what they were wearing.”

The “mistake” cost those who were inhabiting the neighboring house to leave “keep what was on”, since they had to leave their belongings inside the rubble of the place, which they could not access. Some of the people affected were transferred to hotels or inns run by the Buenos Aires government, but still many families, with several children and pregnant women, continue to wait under the Illia highway just as they were evicted two days ago.

As reported, three workers who were trapped in the houses were injured as a result of the collapse and had been transferred to the Fernández Hospital.

The Padre Múgica neighborhood is the second largest settlement within the City of Buenos Aires.

The affected residents made a note addressed to the Buenos Aires authorities where they explained the fact and warned that they remained “without answers” under the Illia highway. In the note they demand an immediate “solution” to their housing problem. Let us remember that the Padre Múgica neighborhood is the second largest settlement within the City of Buenos Aires.
