Strictly speaking, the first mullets were achieved in September 2022. As every year, the species began at that time with its traditional use and with strong presence in the Mar Chiquita lagoon, since the lack of flow made it impossible for him to enter the canals and streams, in a season to be forgotten. However, they were difficult to find for the first fans that arrived. Reason: they would not want to eat. Despite this, they ended up succumbing (and barely) to the most experienced who found their way around.
But with the new year lined up the planets. Or rather, the conditions. On the one hand, the lagoon recovered a large part of its level, thanks to the wind that brought in seawater. And on the other, the summer sun imposes thermal conditions. As a consequence, the best possible ecosystem for mullet fishing was established: hyper-transparent water, very warm and “moved” by the wind. The perfect setting.
There were days when the fishing was formidable. The pike is very active and the catches are sensational, with true “chanchas”, the kind that offer a huge fight. It is a fishing in which the reading of the field is key, because it is necessary to detect the movement of the shoals. “A fish seen” say those who know the most, many of them excellent guides in the area, either leaving from Balneario Parque Mar Chiquita or from the “San Gabriel” or “Juan y Juan” Recreation Centers, which offer a drop-off service. and boat rentals.

There is no typical recipe because the mullet is not a typical fish: if it doesn’t want to bite, it doesn’t bite. This 2023 brought us in its beginnings the best of a mullet fishing that came barely warm. Captivating and enigmatic like few others, this species attracts its own and strangers. More and more fishermen are breaking with the myth that it “does not bite” and are encouraged to one of the most satisfying incursions of this beloved sport. And if we add to this the paradise that the Mar Chiquita lagoon represents, we can safely say that we are facing one of the true pleasures of sport fishing. Even though many times it is the “ojonas” that end up winning.
