USA vs. Iran: Everything you need to know about the crucial World Cup match

The United States has a clear goal for its match against Iran on Tuesday: win.

The Americans are going to have to do more than channel Al Davis to “just win” as anything short of that will result in World Cup elimination. The United States hopes to avoid embarrassment against a country better known for being its rival on the geopolitical spectrum than it is on the football field.

The United States have only scored one goal in the tournament, against Wales in a 1-1 draw. The United States drew with England on Friday, for which millions of people tuned in on FOX.

The Iranian government at home is dealing with mass protests, while its national team offered support to the protesters ahead of their World Cup opener against England. The United States also riled Iran over the weekend when the US Soccer Federation briefly removed the Islamic Republic emblem from its flag to support protesters.

Iran asked FIFA to suspend the United States from the World Cup for this. USA coach Gregg Berhalter apologized for the removal on behalf of the federation.

“We had no idea what US Soccer had to offer,” Berhalter said. “All we can do on our behalf is apologize on behalf of the players and staff.”

How is the United States doing?

US vs. Iran story

Iran defeated the United States in a 1998 World Cup match in France that eliminated the Americans from the tournament. It is the only game the two teams have played against each other.

“That game stuck in my mind. It burns in my mind,” Berhalter said Monday. “What I saw from the opening whistle is a team that really wanted to win the game and a team that didn’t really want to win the game.”
