The Mexican was left with the fight after the unanimous decision of the judges in the fight with the British. In the fight that marked his comeback in Mexico after 12 years, Álvarez outpointed Ryder by scores of 120-107, 118-109 and 118-109.
“Ryder is a warrior, a great fighter with a lot of heart who had everything to win and nothing to lose, I really liked giving this show to my people because they deserve it. Dreams come true, you just have to work and be willing to sacrifices that all this entails, and there is Canelo for a while,” Álvarez said after the fight.
“My people are very special to me, we are here to give them a great night and tonight is for the history of Mexico,” he added.
In front of more than 50,000 fans at the Akron stadium in Guadalajara, where Álvarez is from, the 32-year-old boxer dominated the entire fight, landing several punches that countered Ryder’s defense.
In the fifth round, Álvarez sent Ryder to the canvas after hitting him in the face with a powerful right hand. In the ninth round, Álvarez landed several punches on the British boxer who looked wobbly but didn’t go down.
“I’m here to make boxing history and we’re going to try to have a rematch with Bivol, and if it doesn’t happen, we’re going to look for the best fights,” said Álvarez.
In May of last year, the Russian Dmitri Bivol retained world light heavyweight title world boxing association after defeating Álvarez by unanimous decision in a fight that took place at the T Mobile Stadium Delaware Las Vegas.
With the victory against Ryder, Álvarez registers a record of 59 wins with 39 knockouts, two draws and two losses.
For his part, Ryder, 34, remains with a record of 32 victories with 18 knockouts and six losses.
